The original problem was scarcity: too few copies, too little access. The new problem is context loss: abundant copies, stripped of the conditions that made them interpretable. A summary circulates without the consent terms that governed the original. A translation travels without the source it was translated from. An AI-assisted synthesis spreads without the fidelity limits that defined what it could and could not be trusted for. Institutions that solved scarcity are poorly designed for this problem. The essay proposes that the unit of portability must shift from the platform to the artifact itself. ## Main argument The essay proceeds in three sections. Section 1 diagnoses the context-loss problem through examples drawn from journalism, scholarship, and everyday AI use. Section 2 traces why existing institutional responses — metadata standards, platform controls, disclosure requirements — address symptoms rather than structure. Section 3 proposes that interpretive conditions should be sealed into the knowledge object at the moment of its creation, so that whatever system receives it next inherits not only the content but the conditions under which it was made and authorized. *Full text available through the course portal.* -----BEGIN KNOBE B64----- eyJhdHRyaWJ1dGlvbiI6eyJnb29kX2ZhaXRoX2RlY2xhcmF0aW9uIjp0cnVlLCJzb3VyY2VzIjpb eyJhdXRob3IiOiJDb3Vyc2UgSW5zdHJ1Y3RvciIsImNvbnRyaWJ1dGlvbiI6IkF1dGhvciBvZiB0 aGUgYXNzaWduZWQgcmVhZGluZy4iLCJyaWdodHNfYmVhcmluZyI6dHJ1ZSwicm9sZSI6Imluc3Ry dWN0b3JfcHJvbXB0In1dfSwiYm9keV9oYXNoIjoiOGY0NWRhY2NkNDNmNzE5N2VlYjZhZmI3OTBm NDA3Zjg3YWExZGE1NGQxN2Q3OTU1NzMzMGI0M2EzMjlmYzJhZCIsImNvbnRlbnRfdHlwZSI6Im9y aWdpbmFsIiwiY3JlYXRlZF9kYXRlIjoiMjAyNi0wMS0xNSIsImxhbmd1YWdlIjoiZW4iLCJsaWNl bnNlIjoiQWxsIHJpZ2h0cyByZXNlcnZlZCIsInBheWxvYWRfaGFzaCI6IjYwMTRiNThlYjZmZjU3 MmZlODQ0ZDM4OTM5NzE3NDM5NzlhNWJiZDFiNjA1OGI1MWNjNTljODkyYTdkZmI1NGUiLCJwcml2 YWN5X2xldmVsIjoiaW50ZXJuYWwiLCJxdWFyYW50aW5lX3N0YXR1cyI6InRydXN0ZWQiLCJzcGVj X3ZlcnNpb24iOiIxLjAiLCJzdW1tYXJ5IjoiQXNzaWduZWQgcmVhZGluZyBmb3IgU09DIDE1MC4g QXJndWVzIHRoYXQga25vd2xlZGdlIGluc3RpdHV0aW9ucyBkZXNpZ25lZCBmb3Igc2NhcmNpdHkg YXJlIHBvb3JseSBzdWl0ZWQgdG8gdGhlIEFJLWVyYSBwcm9ibGVtIG9mIGNvbnRleHQgbG9zcywg YW5kIHByb3Bvc2VzIHRoYXQgaW50ZXJwcmV0aXZlIGNvbmRpdGlvbnMgc2hvdWxkIGJlIHNlYWxl ZCBpbnRvIHRoZSBhcnRpZmFjdCBhdCBjcmVhdGlvbi4gVXNlZCBhcyB0aGUgc291cmNlIHJlYWRp bmcgZm9yIHRoZSBBSS1Bc3Npc3RlZCBSZWZsZWN0aW9uIGV4YW1wbGUgS05PQkUuIiwidGFncyI6 WyJhc3NpZ25lZC1yZWFkaW5nIiwic29jMTUwIiwiZWR1Y2F0aW9uLWV4YW1wbGUiLCJjb250ZXh0 LWxvc3MiXSwidGl0bGUiOiJLbm93bGVkZ2UgSW5zdGl0dXRpb25zIGluIHRoZSBBZ2Ugb2YgQ29u dGV4dCBMb3NzIiwidXNlX2NvbmRpdGlvbnMiOnsiY29uc2VudF9ub3RlIjoiRGlzdHJpYnV0ZWQg dW5kZXIgY291cnNlIHRlcm1zLiIsImxpY2Vuc2UiOiJBbGwgcmlnaHRzIHJlc2VydmVkIiwicGVy bWl0dGVkIjpbImNvdXJzZSByZWFkaW5nIGFuZCBkaXNjdXNzaW9uIiwic3R1ZGVudCBjaXRhdGlv biBpbiBjb3Vyc2UgYXNzaWdubWVudHMiXSwicmVxdWVzdGVkX3ByZXNlcnZhdGlvbnMiOlsiZG8g bm90IHJlZGlzdHJpYnV0ZSBvdXRzaWRlIHRoZSBlbnJvbGxlZCBjb3Vyc2UgZ3JvdXAiXX19 -----END KNOBE B64-----
