Submitting sealed work: student handout

Your instructor is collecting this assignment as a sealed KNOBE file. A sealed file is plain text that records, in a verifiable way, who wrote it, what it responds to, and what you declared about AI use. Sealing adds about two minutes to your normal workflow.

The steps

  1. Download the journey file attached to the Canvas assignment (it ends in .knobe.md).
  2. Open knobe.org/studio in any browser and choose the Create tab.
  3. Under Start from a journey, drag the journey file in (or paste its text). Pick your step. The form fills in the course, the assignment link, and the right settings for you.
  4. Write your work in the body field, or paste it from wherever you drafted it.
  5. Answer the AI question the form asks. It depends on the policy your instructor set:
    • If AI is not allowed for this step, the form records your declaration that the work is yours alone.
    • If AI is allowed with disclosure, and you used any AI tool, name it and say specifically what it did and what you did. "Suggested two sources; I read them and wrote all text" is a good disclosure. "Used ChatGPT" is not specific enough.
  6. Press Seal, download the file, and upload it to Canvas like any other file.

What sealing does and does not do

Sealing fingerprints your file. Anyone can later verify that what they have is exactly what you sealed, unchanged. It is your record too: in a grading dispute, the sealed file shows precisely what you submitted and what you declared, with a date.

Sealing does not scan, grade, or judge your writing, and it does not detect AI use. The declaration is yours; making it honestly is the point.

Privacy

Everything happens inside the browser page on your device. Your work is not uploaded to knobe.org or anyone else; the only copy that leaves your machine is the file you upload to Canvas yourself. This matters: no third party processes your coursework.

If something goes wrong

If Canvas rejects the upload, tell your instructor the assignment's allowed file types need to include md. If you lose the downloaded file, load the journey and seal again; the newer date simply shows when you resealed.
